PROOF
OF ITS POTENCY
MAKE ART/STOP AIDS allowed people from all over the world to
think about HIV in another way. Thousands of people came across
the two exhibitions during the week, allowing much needed conversation
about HIV to take place. (What was even more exciting was hearing
HIV talked about in different languages.)
For some, it was a moving experience. There were many young folks
who may have never met anyone who was HIV-positive. Meeting Historias
Positivas participants changed what it was like to be a person
with HIV, while ArtMoves surely gave researchers and scientists
at the conference a more colorful and creative view of AIDS.
As a proof of its potency, MAKE ART/STOP AIDS staff had their
hands full answering questions on how these exhibitions can be
done in other countries. In fact, showings at Brazil and South
Africa are in the works.
This was the first time MAKE ART/STOP AIDS made its presence felt
in a formal sense at the International AIDS Conference, a monumental
event that takes place every other year. By all accounts, it was
an incredible success. In the words of Alejandro Brito Lemus “The
impact of the exhibitions went beyond Mexico. It reached people
from others parts of the world”
The next conference will be in Vienna, 2010.
